These women have chosen to go through the challenges of becoming a parent without the help of a partner. Single Mothers by Choice is an organization that provides support and resources for women who have chosen to become single mothers. The group was founded in 1978 by Jane Mattes, a psychotherapist who became a single mother by choice after her divorce.

Since then, the organization has grown exponentially, and now has over 5,000 members in the United States and Canada. The group provides support through a variety of means, including an annual conference, monthly meetings, and an online forum. For these women, the choice to become a single mother was not an easy one. But they all made the decision because they knew it was what was best for them and their future children. In 2006, at the age of 45 and after 17 years as a single mother by choice without any formal education on how to be one from her own experience alone-Mariska gave birth to August in NYC. She said becoming an expectant mom was among some other rewarding experiences that came up during this time like finishing law school while also raising young children together with their father who had been away for most likely 8 -10 years before meeting him again just recently so everything could finally happen for them.
